On Nature

When I look at nature, whether a sunlit landscape or a knotty old tree in a forgotten bit of forest, I always marvel at how much beauty there is, and I get a feeling that there’s almost too much to take in all at once. I’m trying to capture that feeling, that overwhelming sense of beauty, in the truest way that I can. I apply oil paint in thick strokes laid side-by-side without blending in a modern twist of the classic Impressionist style. The colors I use are bold and bright as they attempt to pull you into their world, and that’s what I’m really trying to do: I want each painting to pull you in close and hold you there, to provide an escape into a beautiful and magical place that you can go anytime you like.

About

Ryan Merritt

Hello, my name is Ryan Merritt and I’m a painter based in Troy, Michigan. I guess I’ve always loved thinking creatively and looking back I suppose I’d say my life as an artist really started with me playing GI-Joe in my bedroom as a little kid.

I remember acting out very detailed, heavily dramatic battles between my toy figures, and at some point, the toys weren’t enough; I needed another way to visualize these wonderful battles I was having!
