Roussilon

Situated in the heart of one of the biggest ochre deposits in the world, Roussillon is famous for its magnificent red cliffs and ochre quarries and is considered to be one of the most impressive villages in France. My mom was there last year and she brought me back a set of pigments in small glass jars, a beautiful range of yellows, oranges and browns. As I mixed the pigments into oil paint, I imagined I was in France in the 1800s getting my paints ready to head out into the countryside for a day of painting. And when deciding what to paint, the answer was obvious: I would paint the cliffs themselves, and I had the perfect colors to do it! Notice the way the reds, yellows and brown shades of earth contrast with the lush green pine trees and sharp blue sky.
